GENERAL WRITING TASK

The IELTS Academic Writing test is made up of two tasks, Writing Task 1 and Writing Task 2. The questions in the Academic Writing test are different to those in the General Training Writing test.

In Writing Task 1, you will be given a situation where you will need to write a letter to request information or explain the situation. You might be asked to write a letter to suggest how to improve facilities at a library.

In Writing Task 2 is a little different. You will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. You will be assessed on whether you can provide general factual information, outline a problem, present a solution, justify an opinion or evaluate and challenge ideas, evidence or an argument.

ABOUT WRITING

  • Task 1(about 20 minutes) is a letter writing. The letter can be formal, informal or semi –formal.The letter should be 150 – 180 words long.

  • Task 2(about 40 minutes) is essay writing of 250 words in response to a question or an argument on a general topic.

TASK DISCRIPTION

TASK - 1 

  • Task Achievement – The letter should explain all the bullet points in the question.The letter should highlight all key features.

  • Grammatical range and accuracy – The letter should have a range of sentence structures.The letter should use correct tenses.The letter should use correct punctuation.

  • Lexical Resource – The letter should include a range of words that are correctly placed and used.The letter should use collocations.The words in the letter should be spelled correctly.

  • Coherence and Cohesion – The letter should be well paragraphed.The letter should judiciously use linking words or connectors.

TASK - 2 

  • Task Response – Under this, the examinee’s ideas and the extent of developing them in order to come to a valid conclusion is judged.

  • Coherence and Cohesion – The candidate is assessed on how she or he organizes information, paragraphs them, and links them up.

  • Lexical Resource– This part assesses the range of the candidate’s vocabulary, spelling, ability of paraphrasing and the choice of words for the relevant context.

  • Grammatical range and accuracy – This is to check the examinee’s control over grammar, ability to form complex sentences and the use of correct tenses.
